How to Spot Crypto Scams in the Age of AI Deepfakes
Imagine a video of a well-known figure calmly explaining how they're doubling every payment. Perfect audio, natural expressions, and the whole thing is a fabrication. Welcome to the new era of crypto scams, where AI steals your money while you trust your own eyes.

Why Deepfakes Are the Perfect Weapon for Scammers
Cryptocurrencies have always attracted scammers, largely because transactions are irreversible. Once it's gone, it's gone. AI deepfakes have added a new dimension to that: false authority.
It used to take hacking someone's Twitter account (now known as X) to falsely post "send BTC, get double back." Today, AI tools can generate a convincing video of a well-known person in a matter of hours, made to look like a live stream, an interview, or an "exclusive" announcement.
A case from Hong Kong in late 2024 shows just how far this technology has come.
An employee joined a video call with several "colleagues" and a "CFO", all of them deepfake avatars of real people he recognised.
The call looked convincing, the faces and voices familiar. He ended up transferring the equivalent of 25 million dollars to foreign accounts, following their instructions.
Crypto scams rarely reach that scale, but the mechanism is the same. A fake face, a false authority, a very real loss.
The Anatomy of a Typical Deepfake Crypto Scam
Modern scams follow a predictable pattern and once you know what to look for, it's hard to miss.
What Gives a Fake Video Away
AI generates convincing video footage, but it still makes characteristic mistakes if you know where to look.
Facial Edges
Deepfakes often show artefacts around the hair, ears and neck, the places where the face meets the background. Look for blurred edges, unnatural colour blending or flickering in those areas.
Eyes and Gaze
Early deepfakes almost never blinked, that's largely been fixed, but the gaze can still feel off. The eyes may not track the other person naturally, or blink less frequently than normal.
Audio
A cloned voice can sound convincing, but pay attention to breathing, hesitation and natural pauses in speech. A synthetic voice often lacks the micro-pauses that make speech feel alive.
Freeze the Frame
Pause the video at random points and zoom in on the face. Artefacts that aren't visible in motion. Grainy skin or unnatural pixels around the mouth and eyes often only show up in a still image.
Check the Source
If a well-known figure is "announcing" a crypto project in a video, it takes thirty seconds to check their official channels and the news. If there's no confirmation anywhere else, that says everything.
The Due Diligence That Could Save You
Spotting deepfakes is only part of the picture. Every crypto project deserves a thorough check before you put any money in.
Ironically, AI is now being used for defence as well. There are several useful tools that can help you detect deepfakes.
That said, it's important to keep in mind that no detector is 100% reliable. Use them as one layer of verification, not the only one. Common sense and independent fact-checking still matter most.
The Golden Rules of Crypto Security
Store any significant amounts on a hardware wallet, a physical device that keeps your keys completely offline and out of reach of hackers.
For everyday transactions, enable two-factor authentication on all exchanges and wallets. Set up an authenticator app, which is significantly harder to compromise than SMS.
Never share your seed phrase with anyone. Not with customer support, not with an app that asks for it. Anyone who asks for it is trying to scam you.
When you come across a transaction that feels urgent or too tempting, wait 24 hours before sending anything. Scammers thrive on that impulse. The pressure and urgency are tools, not coincidence.
Skepticism Is Your Greatest Asset
In a world where AI can generate a convincing video of anyone in a matter of hours, critical thinking has never mattered more.
Deepfakes are a new tool in a very old game.
By understanding these patterns and applying basic digital hygiene, you can protect yourself and your assets. Always verify. Always question. And never rush when money is on the line.
