Tokenized Government Bonds: Market Growth in 2026

The tokenized US Treasury market grew from $8.9 billion to around $14.9 billion in 2026. We look at the leading issuers, what is driving the growth, the ECB’s Pontes system and the risks investors should know about.

The market for tokenized US Treasuries grew from $8.9 billion at the start of 2026 to around $14.9 billion by mid-October, after peaking at roughly $16 billion in early August.

It is the largest and most mature category of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), bridging the traditional bond market and blockchain infrastructure.

In this post, we explain what tokenized government bonds are, who leads the market, what is driving its growth and which risks are worth keeping in mind.

We also take a look at Europe, where the European Central Bank launched Pontes in September, a system for settling tokenized assets in central bank money.

What are tokenized government bonds?

A tokenized government bond is a digital token on a blockchain that represents a share in a government debt security or in a fund that invests in such securities.

In practice, these are most often short-term US Treasury bills (T-bills) and the money market funds that hold them.

The token’s value doesn’t depend on speculative demand but on the yield of the underlying asset. According to RWA.xyz, the 7-day APY on these products stood at around 3.6% in mid-October 2026.

Compared to traditional bonds, the tokenized version offers several practical differences:

  • Faster settlement: ownership can be transferred almost in real time, without waiting several days.
  • 24/7 availability: tokens can be transferred outside the trading hours of traditional markets.
  • Programmability: tokens can be used in smart contracts, for example as collateral.
  • Fractional ownership: allows smaller investments than are typical in the institutional market.

The numbers: how the market grew in 2026

The value of tokenized US Treasuries has grown by around 67% since the start of the year. The market first crossed the $10 billion mark in February and the $15 billion mark in May.

Tokenized US Treasuries: distributed value, USD billions

Growth was strongest in the first five months, and after the August peak the market contracted slightly. By comparison, at the start of 2025 its value was below $4 billion.

Tokenized Treasuries remain the largest segment of the broader RWA market, whose distributed value (excluding stablecoins) stood at around $39 billion in early October 2026. The number of tracked products has risen to 117.

Who leads the market?

The market is concentrated around a handful of large issuers, including both traditional asset managers and crypto-native companies. In mid-October 2026, the largest individual products were:

In mid-October, Ondo Finance announced that its tokenized Treasury products had surpassed $3 billion in total, with USDY overtaking BlackRock’s BUIDL for the first time.

Franklin Templeton (BENJI funds) is also among the leaders: its tokenized Treasury holdings doubled during 2026, surpassing $2.5 billion.

Concentration remains high. In May, the five largest products held around 71% of the market, meaning that a problem at a single issuer could affect the entire sector.

What is driving the growth?

Tokenized bonds kept growing even while the broader crypto market was in decline, suggesting that investors are looking for a more stable source of yield. Several factors stand out.

Institutional entry

The investor base has expanded from decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and crypto treasuries to corporate treasuries, family offices and fintech platforms. The average position still exceeds $250,000 per holder, confirming that this remains primarily an institutional market.

On-chain cash management

Companies and protocols holding funds in stablecoins can move part of their liquidity into tokenized Treasury bills and earn yield without leaving the blockchain environment.

New market infrastructure

In the US, the DTCC announced a tokenization service for October 2026 with more than 50 participating institutions, while in the spring the SEC approved rule changes for the Nasdaq and NYSE exchanges that allow trading in tokenized securities.

Expansion across multiple blockchains

Products are now available on Ethereum, Solana, Stellar, Avalanche and other networks, and the number of tracked holders has grown to more than 86,000.

The European perspective: Pontes and the ECB

On 21 September 2026, the European Central Bank launched Pontes, a Eurosystem system that connects DLT platforms with TARGET Services. This allows wholesale transactions in tokenized assets to be settled in central bank money.

It addresses one of the key challenges of tokenized markets: a bond can be transferred on a blockchain, but the cash leg of the transaction has so far mostly taken place off-chain or through private settlement assets such as stablecoins. Pontes is intended exclusively for regulated financial institutions and will be developed in stages, alongside the longer-term Appia initiative. It is wholesale market infrastructure and is not directly accessible to retail investors.

On the same day, the ECB announced that it is preparing to invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenized securities, with settlement through Pontes. The ECB’s Executive Board will decide on the details and timing of these investments once the preparatory work is complete. Earlier, from 30 March 2026, the ECB had also enabled DLT-based assets to be accepted as eligible Eurosystem collateral.

For the European market, this is an important infrastructure milestone, although on its own it does not guarantee rapid growth in issuance or liquidity.

Risks and limitations

Despite their growth, tokenized government bonds are not without risk. The main limitations are:

  • Limited secondary market liquidity: most products operate on a mint-and-redeem model with the issuer, and trading between investors remains thin.
  • Transfer restrictions: many funds are available only to qualified or institutional investors and require prior verification (KYC).
  • Issuer concentration: a small number of products hold a large share of the market.
  • Technology and custody risks: smart contract vulnerabilities, cyberattacks or custody failures can affect access to assets.
  • Interest rate risk: yields depend on interest rates; if rates fall, so does the yield on tokenized products.

It is also worth noting that the market dipped slightly after its August peak, from around $16.2 billion to $14.9 billion, showing that growth is not linear.

Conclusion

In 2026, tokenized government bonds have become the largest category of tokenized real-world assets, growing by around 67% since the start of the year. Growth is being led by major asset managers and institutional investors, while new infrastructure such as the DTCC’s tokenization service in the US and the ECB’s Pontes system in Europe is laying the groundwork for further expansion.

At the same time, the market remains relatively small compared to the traditional bond market, as well as concentrated and limited in liquidity. The coming period will show whether the new infrastructure can attract more issuance, particularly of European government bonds.
